Having feelings of pain, stiffness, or tightness in the upper trapezius muscle is a common complaint that I hear almost daily as a physical therapist.
In my experience, most people strench and stretch away at this muscle, which may provide temporary relief but then the same symptoms return shortly thereafter.
Although there’s nothing wrong with stretching it, you may want to actually work on strengthening it as well as work on the mobility or the opposing muscles (pecs, lats) and the spine in this region (cervical and thoracic).
